The Council’s Allotment Site on Meadow Vale is ready for occupation by tenants, with the completion of external fencing, internal pathways & fencing, & the provision of sheds by the Parish Council.

A footpath linking the car park at Meadow Vale is under construction & is being built to Cumbria County Council adoptable standard. A further access path will later be constructed at the western end of the site, linking the site to the cycletrack, which Sustrans, which maintains the cycletrack, has kindly given permission for & for which Iggesund, which owns the field where the footpath is to be built, has kindly allowed. The latter path will facilitate disabled access to the Allotment & Community Garden sites. Work is due to commence on the installation of external fencing for the Council’s Community Garden on land next to the Allotment Site in the Spring, & the Council proposes to develop the site to include raised beds & polytunnels.

It is disappointing to note that criminal damage, amounting to some £2,000, to one of the Council’s contractor’s vehicles, was carried out, it is believed, over the Easter weekend. The matter is in the hands of Cumbria Police, & if anyone has any information which may help catch the culprits, they can report that either to the Police or to a representative of the Council.

On Friday 20 April, around sixty pupils from Seaton Academy & Seaton Junior Schools helped volunteers & Council members plant over four hundred saplings along the side of the footpath from the car park & at various other areas on the site. The tree species consisted of 75 Silver Birch, 45 Cherry, 15 Field Maple, 45 Downy Birch, 30 Goat Willow, 45 Rowan, 30 Oak, 60 Hazel, 30 Dogwood & 75 Hawthorn. The latter has been planted to form a screen around the Council’s Allotment site.
