Seaton Community Champion Award 2017
Wednesday, 14 February 2018 16:06

This is the third year of the Seaton Community Champion Award, which is designed to give recognition to people who have made a valuable contribution to village life. Nominations were sought in December & a selection panel consisting of Seaton Vicar the Reverend Grainger, Seaton Academy Headteacher Mrs Banks & Parish Councillors Mrs Lily Harwood, Julie Norman & Celia Tibble reviewed those nominations in early January. There are two categories of award: the first is an individual contribution to the community & the second is a contribution as a part of a group.

Six nominations were received, all exhibiting commendable achievements: Gill Brinicombe; Jean Dalton; Matthew the Chemist; Seaton Junior Football Club Coaches; Nathan Todd & Beth Ludford from the Royal Oak; & Vicky Smart .
The winner of the individual award was Jean Dalton. Jean was nominated for her dedication to helping others, both the old & infirm, spending a great deal of her time visiting & helping others in their homes & hospital, bringing them cheer & comfort, despite being eighty years old herself. In addition, she commits time to the Church, raising funds & helping to organise events, demonstrating amazing strength & dedication. Jean has undertaken these efforts for many years since her retirement as a teacher, despite suffering illness herself at times & the panel considered that this commitment to help others deserved recognition.
The winner of the group category was Vicky Smart, as leader of Seaton Rainbows. Vicky has run the Rainbow Group for many years, in fact since her daughter, who is now eighteen, was a Rainbow herself! Many village girls have benefited from the skills learned & adventures held over the years & there is always a waiting list of girls eager to join the group. 2017 was an important year for the Girl Guiding movement & Vicky organised a commemorative event which brought many villagers of differing ages together to celebrate. The panel decided that Vicky’s contribution to running Seaton Rainbows over many years deserved recognition.
The winners were presented with an engraved, silver salver at the February meeting of the Parish Council.
