Tallest Sunflower Competition
Tuesday, 17 October 2017 09:49

During the Spring, the Parish Council delivered ‘giant’ sunflower seeds, pots & compost for all Seaton Schools’ children, inviting them to see who could grow the tallest plants. During September, councillors visited children’s houses with their tape measures & recorded the height of each declared entry.

The Parish Council Chairman, Lily Harwood, visited schools in October to make the awards to the winning gardeners, with the biggest three in each school winning a prize, & each entrant receiving a framed picture of themselves with their sunflower.

The young gardeners with the biggest plants grown at each school, together with the height of the plants, were as follows:

Seaton St Paul’s C of E Junior School

Winner: Sarah Davies, 2.35 metres

Second: Olivia Moffat, 2.22 metres

Third: Lucas Roper, 2.12metres

Seaton Academy

Winner: Byron Peak, 2.49 metres

Second: Jake Gregory, 2.25 metres

Third: Daniel Graham, 2.16 metres

The Council was pleased to find more children entering their flowers this year, some of whose grandparents kindly volunteered garden space. Although there were some big plants this year, as well as some huge, plate sized flowers, the holders of the record for the tallest sunflowers remain Cassi & Maddi Hunter, at 2.79 metres.
