Seaton Community Champions 2019
Thursday, 20 February 2020 09:49

This is the fifth year of the Seaton Community Champion Award, which is designed to give recognition to people who have made a valuable contribution to village life. Nominations were sought in December & a selection panel consisting of Seaton Vicar the Reverend Grainger, Seaton Academy Headteacher Mrs Banks, Seaton C of E Junior School Headteacher Mrs Dickinson & Parish Councillors Mrs Lily Harwood & Julie Norman reviewed those nominations in January.

There are two categories of award: the first is an individual contribution to the community & the second is a contribution as a part of a group. Six nominations were received, all exhibiting commendable achievements: Julie Bethwaite; Gill Brinicombe; Lynne Hardman; Terry Hughes; Kevin Moore; & Seaton Junior School Canteen Staff.

The winner of the individual award was Terry Hughes. Terry was recognised for his contribution to Seaton Athletic Club, whom he has assisted to coach & administer since 1971, following in his father’s footsteps. He still organises club training sessions on three evenings each week.

The winner of the group award was Seaton Junior School Canteen Staff. Each Thursday during school term time, Mrs Magill & her small team provide a two-course lunch & help-yourself refreshments for people aged sixty years & over. The majority of people who attend live alone & the occasions help renew old friendships & develop new ones. Bringing people together for an hour of happiness each week is greatly appreciated by the participants. The kitchen staff enjoy the pleasure their efforts bring to these people & while it adds a great deal to their workload, it is a very worthwhile contribution to the community.

The winners received their awards at the Seaton Parish Council meeting held on 17 February.
